Elections

Local Government Elections are the means by which Council members are held accountable for their performance as community representatives.

Council elections take place in October every 2 years, with 4 of the 8 Councillors being up for re election. Elections being held in October 2009, 2011 etc.

The President is elected every 2 years from within the elected Councillors by the new Council.

Eligibility to Vote in Local Government Elections

If you are not on the State Electoral roll, you may not vote in Local Government Elections.

Work through the checklist supplied below to decide if you need to enrol to vote in Local Government Elections.

MY CIRCUMSTANCES ARE DO I HAVE TO APPLY TO BE ON THE ROLL
You live in the district (or ward) and are on the State electoral roll  No need to apply
You live in the district (or ward) and are not on the State electoral roll Yes – get a form from any post office or the WA Electoral Commission or the Shire library and apply to be on the State Electoral roll.
You are not an Australian Citizen but were on the local government Electoral roll in 1996 and have owned or occupied rateable property in the district since then. Yes – see how to apply below.
Your property is rateable and is owned or occupied by more than two people or by a company. Two people only who are not already on the local government roll for the district (or ward) must be selected by a majority of the owners or occupiers or the company. They must be on the State or Commonwealth roll to be eligible. If more than one property is involved the same two people must be nominated for all the properties.
You own property that is rateable in the district (or ward) and you are on the State or Commonwealth Electoral roll but you live elsewhere.

You have a right of occupancy of property in the district (or ward) that is rateable and you are on the State or Commonwealth roll but electoral live elsewhere. If you have a right of continuous occupation under a lease, tenancy agreement or other legal instrument for a least the next 3 months following the date you apply, you should make an application – see how to apply below.

HOW TO APPLY

  • You can get an ‘Enrolment Eligibility Claim’ form 2 from the Shire Office or download a form here Click here to download form 2. 
  • Those nominated by a company, must use form 2A and attach the letter of nomination to the form. Email the shire office to have a form sent to you – admin@chapmanvalley.wa.gov.au
  • Those nominated by co-owners or co-occupiers, must use from 2A and attach the letter of nomination to the form. Email the shire office to have a form sent to you – admin@chapmanvalley.wa.gov.au.
